Leadership in the manufacturing realm can be challenging; high-impact jobs with possible high turnover can create a difficult environment to thrive in as a leader. We place manufacturing leaders every day at Alliance Technical Solutions, so we know what companies are looking for. Learn more about how you can position yourself as a leader:
So many problems and potential problems can be solved with effective communication, especially in a place such as a plant floor! Clear and concise communication skills can be the difference between a serious injury and a productive day. Learn how your staff communicates best with you and adopt the best method of communication for them. Learning how your staff wants to communicate with you can be as easy as a quick survey or a questionnaire at a meeting.
A lot happens in a day. People are running around and asking you for your input on 1000 things. It can be easy to get caught up in the mess, but it also can be dangerous. Listening to what’s happening around you can give you the leverage you need to solve problems and move the business forward. Really listen to your employees as they talk to you, whether it’s positive or negative. Analyze what they’re saying and how you can turn their thoughts into productive actions. As a busy leader, it’s also important to listen in meetings and quick chats with employees you aren’t directly in charge of. This will help you have a working knowledge of what’s happening in the entire company, which may help you make better, more informed decisions.
Learn from others
This is one of the best ways to become an informed leader. Being in a position to make important decisions can be stressful, and it’s normal to feel lost at times. Learning from the example of others is a positive way to get you through tough times. Pay attention to the leaders around you at work and take note of what works and what doesn’t work. It can also be valuable to read books about making decisions as a leader to help shape your style and how you want to present yourself as a leader.
Know your weaknesses
Everyone has their weakness, and it’s best if you are able to identify them and work around them. For example, if you’re horrible at writing emails, seek out coworkers you know can write a great email and ask them to lunch. This is a great opportunity to not only expand your skillset, but to build relationships with people in your company. It may never be your favorite thing to do, but by recognizing your weaknesses and working to close the gaps, you will be more likely to succeed as a leader. If you’re having trouble nailing down your weaknesses and how they’re holding you back, ask your friends, coworkers or mentors. This is a great opportunity for them to help you help yourself! Bring up the topic in a light, gentle way as to not incite fear in those you are asking. With open dialogue, you may learn a lot about yourself.
A little bit of practice paired with some self-evaluation is a recipe for success as a rising leader. Following the simple tips above will ensure you are setting out on a path to success.
